Emily Hoppmann, DVM

Elgin Veterinary Hospital strives to offer premier service at reasonable prices. Emily Christine Hoppmann, DVM Emily was born in Charleston, SC, but has spent most of her time in Columbia so she considers herself a Columbia native. She is happy to be practicing small animal and exotic medicine in her hometown, where she has worked in this same veterinary community since high school. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School for elementary school then moved on to Cardinal Newman Middle and High School. She majored in Biology and Chemistry at the University of South Carolina and was awarded her Bachelors degree magna cum laude. While in college she worked as a veterinary technician and worked in a Population Genetics Research Laboratory at the University of South Carolina studying sharks and other marine life. She did her veterinary training at the University of Georgia, where she specialized in small animal and exotic animal medicine, and was awarded her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine degree magna cum laude.

After several years in private practice working with small animals and exotics, Emily decided to go back to school to focus on her work with exotic animals. She did a year-long Internship in Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery at Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services in Virginia. This additional schooling in exotics, along with her constant continuing education in exotics and small animals, helps ensure that she can offer the highest quality of care to all exotic species, cats, and dogs. She loves to learn and strives to be able to offer more and more services to her patients. She has studied alternative medicine, acupuncture, and ultrasound, just to name a few, over the last few years in order to practice integrated medicine and offer point of care medicine. She is overjoyed as the practice owner of Elgin Veterinary Hospital, a Better Business Bureau endorsed hospital, where she can be sure that all animals and people who walk through the door are always treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. She has been happy to be able to add her own personal touch to the hospital, while providing quality care in a warm, family-like environment. Her goal is to ensure that Elgin Veterinary Hospital is a place where you and your pets will always feel at home and know that the entire Elgin Veterinary Family will always treat your pets as if they were our own.

Emily enjoys being involved in multiple veterinary medical associations in order to continue her education and stay in touch with colleagues. She is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the South Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (SCAV), the Greater Columbia Veterinary Association (GCVA, past vice-president), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV).

Emily has a deep love of Columbia and a commitment to local, family-owned businesses. As an active member of the Kershaw Chamber of Commerse (KCC) and the Elgin Business Association (EBA) she helps work with other business owners to promote people to “Think Local”. The entire Elgin Veterinary Team also enjoys being a part of the community and gives back as much as possible to those in need through events such as blood drives and raising money for local animal rescue group.

Part of her love for this area is due to the University of South Carolina, where she is the Pre-Veterinarian Pre-Professional Advisor at the University of South Carolina. This is a position she approached the University about adding to its Pre-Professional Department as soon as she graduated from veterinary school and moved back to Columbia. Her passion for working with students has many factors including her respect for the University, her passion for teaching, and wanting to help pre-veterinary students achieve their dreams.

Emily has a soft-spot in her heart for rescue animals and strongly recommends that her owners look at rescue groups and shelters to find an animal that will be perfect for their family. Emily’s menagerie consists of nothing but rescue animals! Emily and the entire Elgin Veterinary Team look forward to having a chance to show you the EVH difference and meeting you and your pets!
